The last big tour of the season is underway: the peloton will ride through Spain at the Vuelta a España from August 17 to September 8.
The race takes the peloton on a 21-day journey from Lisbon in Portugal to Madrid in Spain with a variety of mountain stages in Puerto de Ancares, Cuitu Negru, Lagos de Covadonga and other key points along the way.
Reigning champion Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease A Bike) is back to defend his overall title, with his former teammate and three-time race winner Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) among the top contenders for the red jersey.
Roglič relinquished the lead to Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) on Stage 6, as the Australian climber stormed to victory from the breakaway, taking the leader's red jersey by a massive 4:51 margin. Roglič regained the lead on Stage 8 with his second win of the race, while Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) fought back to Granada on Stage 9 to take the breakaway.
João Almeida leads the UAE Team Emirates Challenge, while other key contenders include Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) and Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost).
Spanish rivals hoping for success on their home Grand Tour include Mikel Landa (Soudal-QuickStep), Enric Mas (Movistar) and Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers). Other contenders include Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious), Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto-Dstny) and Roglič's substitutes Florian Lipowitz and Aleksandr Vlasov.
Other riders to watch out for include Jhonatan Narváez, Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers), Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis), Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates), Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease A Bike) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar).
