Roadblocks made them famous. Now the group will no longer be the last generation. The goals of the project will also change under the new name.
The Last Generation climate initiative is giving up its name. However, they will not disband, but will advocate for their cause with a new focus and different forms of protest, as the group's co-founder and spokeswoman, Carla Hinrichs, announced in the news magazine “Spiegel”.
“Something new, something big will emerge from the structures of the last generation,” said the 27-year-old. “There will still be protests. Diversity and creativity are required. But blockades in front of cars and airports and roads are no longer our focus.”
The last generation announced the abandonment of adhesive blockages in road traffic in January. The name Last Generation was derived from the activists' belief that they belong to the last generation that can avert a global climate catastrophe. Hinrichs now explains the move away from this name with the rapid progression of global warming.
“The situation is escalating before our eyes. And because we are no longer the last generation before the tipping points, we will no longer call ourselves that. We’re leaving the name behind us,” said Hinrichs. “Our assessment has changed. When we started, the government would still have been able to address the climate catastrophe. Today we are stuck
Mitten.
The group Last Generation was formed after a climate hunger strike in Berlin and is calling for more measures for climate protection. Since the beginning of 2022, she has repeatedly made a name for herself with blockade campaigns. Earlier this year, the group announced a change in strategy.
According to Hinrichs, the project is now about to be expanded. “We want to make connections and prepare for the crises to come. It’s about mutual protection, social justice and cohesion.”
