Arrested again for murder in connection with the 1994 shooting of a taxi driver

A sixth person has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a taxi driver who was shot dead in his taxi more than 30 years ago.

Ethsham Ul-Haq Ghafoor was found in his car with his hands tied to the steering wheel in the early hours of November 22, 1994 in Nottinghamshire.

The 26-year-old, known as Shami, was spotted by a milkman at Lambley Lane Playing Fields in Gedling at around 0430 GMT.

Nottinghamshire Police said a 43-year-old man from Sneinton was arrested on Tuesday, following the arrests of four men aged 64, 57, 52 and 51 and a 47-year-old woman in November.

These arrests came days after police announced they were re-investigating Mr Ghafoor's death and offering a £50,000 reward for information.

All suspects were released on bail pending further investigations.

Det Ch Insp Clare Dean, who led the investigation, said: “The investigation is continuing quickly and we would like to personally thank the local community for providing information and the media for sharing our appeal.”

“We believe the answer to Shami’s murder still lies in the community and would encourage anyone with information who has not yet contacted us to please come forward.”

According to police, Mr Ghafoor, of Sherwood Rise, Nottingham, was last seen in Carlton Square at around 02:00 GMT.

The father, who had a five-year-old son, was expecting a baby daughter at the time of his death.

Several arrests were made at the time, but no one has ever been convicted following his death.
