Where can there be snow?

Endless bad weather: December brought almost no snow to Germany this year. Will it remain a Christmas gray?

Will it snow for Christmas this year? Shortly before the holidays, millions of people in Germany are asking themselves this question. Because a splendor of snow at Christmas has become extremely rare. This year too, only very few Germans will be able to enjoy a snowball fight. There will probably be a white Christmas almost nowhere in Germany this year. Snow is only expected in the southeast on Friday, which could last over the holidays, said meteorologist Tanja Egerer from the German Weather Service (DWD). But this is not certain yet.

The rest of the country will probably come away empty-handed with the white splendor over the holidays. Temperatures will be in the mid single digits and the weather will remain unstable. It will be rainy and windy in the coming days.

On Friday night, the risk of frost increases in the south and southeast, which, according to the German Weather Service, can lead to slippery conditions. It will be cooler on Friday: snow showers are possible in the mountains, and in the Alps a few centimeters of fresh snow may remain, even in valley areas. The maximum temperatures reach values between 2 and 8 degrees.

The last time there was a white Christmas was in 2010. At that time, the entire republic was covered by a blanket of snow, as qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung from the “wetter.net” portal says. Since then, there has hardly been a white Christmas across Germany, except in higher altitudes. In Berlin, for example, he puts the chance of snow on Boxing Day at just five percent.

Jung believes some snowfall is possible on the Sunday and Monday before Christmas. However, this doesn't change much in the overall forecast for the lowlands: “A white Christmas is unlikely this year either.” t-online meteorologist Michaela Koschak also says that in many places it's more likely to be bad weather instead of thick flakes. Snow could only fall and stay in mountainous regions.
