Following in the footsteps of Mangione's strong family rootspublished at 3:02 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time
While we wait for news from the hearing, let's take a moment to look back at Luigi Mangione's family background.
In recent weeks, Mangione's name has been linked to the murder of insurance executive Brian Thompson.
But for decades, that name has meant something completely different: wealth, power, notoriety, philanthropy – especially within Baltimore's Italian community.
According to Giovanna Aquia Blatterman, they are one of, if not the most “respected” Italian families in the area.
Aquia Blatterman, now 77, who came to the United States from Sicily in 1953, said she knows three generations of Mangiones.
The family was “generous” and “self-made,” she said, while Luigi, whom she met briefly about eight years ago, seemed smart, approachable and good-looking — “as you can see.”
“Something happened to him,” she mused, referring to his alleged involvement in the murder. “They are two different people.”
