PITTSBURGH – The San Francisco 49ers are parting ways with former Pittsburgh Steelers punter Pressley Harvin III, announcing the signing of the special teamer as part of their first round of roster cuts this offseason.
Harvin, 25, was released by the Steelers on the first day of the offseason and was on a quiet market for most of the summer. After a tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the former draft pick remained a free agent until the preseason, when he was signed by the 49ers and had a chance to compete for a spot in the starting lineup against Mitch Wishnowky, who was suffering from knee irritation at the time.
Ultimately, Harvin is once again a free agent and is looking for a new home for the 2024 season.
The former Georgia Tech star and Ray Guy Award winner struggled in the NFL. In three seasons, he averaged 39.4 yards per punt, with his best year being 2022 when he averaged 41.1 yards per punt. He completed 34.6% of his passes inside the 20-yard line and has 14 touchbacks on his resume.
The Steelers, in turn, quickly signed former Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles punter Cameron Johnston as a free agent and have not regretted the decision. Johnston averaged over 60 yards per punt in one of the team's three preseason games and shone throughout training camp and tryouts.
Johnson is Pittsburgh's star specialist alongside Chris Boswell, alongside names like All-Pro Miles Killebrew, recently signed Tyler Matakevich and long snapper Christian Kuntz. The team will continue to go through its roster to find the rest of the group, as many new faces will be taking on roles on special teams while securing a spot on the 2024 roster.
The Steelers, along with the rest of the NFL, will announce their official rosters on August 27 at 4 p.m.
