A new airline for the Democratic Republic of Congo – Aviation.Direct

With the official inauguration of Air Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has taken a significant step towards improving national and regional aviation connections. In partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, the new project at Kinshasa N'djili International Airport was presented by Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi. This joint venture, in which the DRC government holds a 51% stake and Ethiopian Airlines holds a 49% stake, exemplifies the growing importance of strategic alliances in African aviation.

The partnership with Ethiopian Airlines is part of a broader strategy to strengthen air transport on the continent. Ethiopian Airlines, known as Africa's most successful airline, brings its expertise and infrastructure to support Air Congo's operations. This includes providing aircraft, technical assistance and training programs for Congolese personnel.

The cooperation is in line with Ethiopian Airlines' Vision 2035, which aims to establish multiple hubs in Africa. For the DRC, a country the size of Western Europe but also often considered lacking in infrastructure, Air Congo offers a much-needed improvement in connectivity between central cities such as Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Goma and Kisangani.

Start of operations with two aircraft

Air Congo started operations with two leased Boeing 737-800s. The aircraft, which were previously used by Ethiopian Airlines, are equipped with 154 seats, 16 of which are in business class. Both aircraft are already integrated into domestic air traffic and serve important routes.

The long-term plan calls for the fleet to be expanded to eight Boeing 737s and two Boeing 787s. This expansion should make it possible to offer national as well as regional and intercontinental connections.

More than an airline: a symbol of progress

The establishment of Air Congo is more than an economic venture – it is a symbol of the DRC's growing ambitions to position itself as a modern player in the region. With a population of over 100 million people and a growing need for mobility, the national airline offers the potential to promote trade, investment and tourism.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Jean-Pierre Bemba said at the inauguration that the airline would play a key role in the economic integration of the country's regions in the coming years.

Ethiopian Airlines' formula for success

Ethiopian Airlines is considered a pioneer in African aviation. With successful partnerships including ASKY in Togo, Malawi Airlines and Zambia Airways, the company has shown how joint ventures can help improve regional connectivity. Although similar projects such as the planned Nigeria Air have failed, Ethiopian Airlines remains a model of discipline and efficiency in an often difficult market environment.

The airline's multi-hub strategy, combined with a modern fleet and extensive network, has made it a model for other African countries to emulate. Air Congo now opens up the opportunity to establish this successful model in the DRK.

Challenges and opportunities

Despite the promising start, the path is not without obstacles. The DRC has struggled with problems in the aviation sector in the past, including security concerns and financial instability. But with an experienced partner like Ethiopian Airlines and clearly defined growth targets, Air Congo appears well positioned to overcome these challenges.

Confidence in the new airline is high as it is expected to not only improve mobility in the country but also serve as a catalyst for economic activity.
