Ordering food has long been very popular. An evaluation by Lieferando now shows the most popular dishes – with a surprise in Bavaria.
Munich – The work is done, the coat has been taken off in the cloakroom and suddenly the evening hunger sets in. I quickly scrolled through Lieferando and ordered a delicious pizza. One way or another, some people have probably already made the decision to conveniently order food instead of standing in the kitchen themselves. Across Germany, around 16 million people use the Lieferando delivery service alone. An evaluation now revealed the favorite foods in the respective federal states. In Bavaria, a globally known dish appears at the top.
People in Bavaria most often order Italian – but their favorite dish comes from America
In its brand new report, Lieferando evaluated the ordering behavior of its users between July 1, 2023 and July 1, 2024. According to the delivery service, internal statistics and data were used and an online survey was carried out among 1,000 respondents across Germany by the market research institute YouGov. The trends for the individual federal states were derived from this. In addition to the top dish, things such as the most frequently chosen cuisine or rising dishes were also evaluated.
If you look at Bavaria, the most popular cuisine between summer 2023 and summer 2024 was Italian. The Free State therefore also reflects the opinion of all Germans. Nationwide, dishes such as pizza, spaghetti Bolognese and other dishes from Italy were also most frequently ordered. Italy also recently came out on top in an international food ranking for the best food.
However, the most popular dish in Bavaria does not come from Italy at all – nor from Bavarian cuisine. In this respect, Bavarians actually value American cuisine. The cheeseburger was the most frequently ordered item in the Free State. The burger, which can be found in stores such as McDonalds and Hans im Glück, was also at the forefront across Germany. A Berliner ordered a double cheeseburger a total of 744 times.

Bavarian dishes are not among the most popular dishes when ordering
If you look at other categories evaluated by Lieferando, you will find dishes such as white sausage or roast pork in vain. For example, the McPlant burger from McDonalds was the rising star among the dishes ordered. French fries and sweet potato fries were very popular among the side dishes. Korean cuisine was the rising star in Bavaria between summer 2023 and summer 2024.
According to Lieferando, the most frequently ordered drinks were the classic Coca-Cola. Bavaria is cultivating an ever greater affinity, in contrast to Ayran, which can be found on the drinks menu in Turkish restaurants, among others.

A surprising detail also emerged when evaluating food orders via Lieferando. While drinks took the top spot in most federal states, in Bavaria it was confectionery. The apple cinnamon donut was the most frequently ordered item. Haribo's cherry colas recorded the strongest increase of all food products. (jr.)
