LuxembourgOn average, over 800 drivers are caught speeding every day
LUXEMBOURG – Does the Grand Duchy have a general speed problem on the roads? In contrast to its German neighbors, Luxembourg's figures are poor.
Anyone who drives along the Grand Duchy's motorways usually looks in vain for a relaxing journey: traffic jams, construction sites and accidents are the order of the day. The long-term construction site on the A3 at the French border in particular has been the scene of more and more accidents in the past, as the LSAP complained in a parliamentary question. “The Police Grand-Ducale carries out traffic controls in accordance with guidelines, including increased controls in certain, particularly dangerous places,” said Transport Minister Yuriko Backes (DP) in her response.
As the minister further explains, only “mobile” or “construction site” type radars are used on large motorway construction sites. The Administration des Ponts et Chaussées reports long-term construction sites, in particular with measures from the Police Grand-Ducale, which then decides on the placement of the radar devices.
As part of a new update to the police computer system since January 1, 2024, several speed checks have been carried out on the A3 and A4: four checks on the A4 between Fötz and Leudelingen, three checks on the A3 towards Livingen and one check on the A3 in Towards Luxembourg. According to the Ministry of Transport, the total number of vehicles flashed in 2021, 2022 and 2023 is 887,861. The figures for 2024 are currently being processed by the Police Grand-Ducale.
There is thirteen times more lightning in Luxembourg than in its neighbors
“The Grand-Ducale Police uses five mobile radar devices, which are used in unmarked vehicles, as well as two radar trailers for construction sites.” “In addition, the traffic police in particular carry out regular speed checks on motorway construction sites,” concluded the Minister of Transport.
According to figures from the Ministry of Transport, around 810 drivers would be flashed per day in Luxembourg. According to the Ministry of Transport, 326,244 drivers were flashed on Luxembourg's roads in 2022 alone. Extrapolated to one million inhabitants (daily cross-border commuter traffic), there are around 379,353 speeding violations. In contrast, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, a total of 2,437,093 drivers were flashed in Germany in 2023, i.e. 29,013 per million inhabitants.
Accordingly, thirteen times more drivers are caught speeding in the Grand Duchy than in neighboring Germany. This is probably due to the fact that there is more commuter traffic and the Grand Duchy is often only used as a “transit country”.
