After five days of negotiations, it remains unclear whether VW and IG Metall have reached an agreement in the collective bargaining dispute. Both will comment on the current status separately from 6:30 p.m. NDR.de will show the union's press conference live.

Initially, IG Metall invited people to a press conference in Hanover. Volkswagen also announced that it would be speaking in Berlin at the same time. Loud The Handelsblatt reports that Volkswagen's management and the union have agreed on an austerity package. However, there has so far been no confirmation from either side.

Points of contention: VW factory closures and redundancies for operational reasons

Volkswagen and IG Metall have been fighting for an austerity package since Monday. Both sides had previously stated that they wanted to resolve the conflict before Christmas. On Thursday evening there was talk of progress, but IG Metall did not rule out failure. “The negotiation process is stuck. We regret that after four days of negotiations there is still a deadlock for the employees,” the union said. The aim is still to find a solution before Christmas, “but only a good one for our colleagues – this is only possible with comprehensive security for jobs, regions and families,” it said. Previously there was talk of positions that were far apart. The main points of contention in the past few days have been possible VW factory closures and redundancies for operational reasons.

VW: The decision was made to continue trading

Basically, we are “on a constructive path”. However, there is still no agreement on some key issues, according to IG Metall. The negotiations could fail because of this. VW only made a brief statement on Thursday evening: Because of the complexity and variety of topics, they decided to continue the negotiations.
