The FBI has opened an investigation into the death of a Royal Caribbean cruise passenger who died after being detained by security. The incident occurred on board a cruise ship traveling from the port of San Pedro to Ensenada, Mexico.
FOX 11 first reported that 35-year-old Michael Virgil was identified as the unruly passenger aboard the ship. Cell phone footage showed Virgil swearing and trying to kick in doors. Witnesses also reported that he attacked crew members and shouted profanities during a fit of rage.
The incident escalated when security guards allegedly used pepper spray, zip ties and handcuffs to subdue Virgil. According to Virgil's family, security also injected him with a sedative. He died within an hour of his arrest.
The Los Angeles County coroner's office has identified Virgil but has not yet released the cause of death.
Virgil's family described his behavior as out of character, noting that he left behind a seven-year-old son with autism and a fiancé, both of whom were aboard the cruise.
