Magdeburg – A terrible attack occurred at the Magdeburg Christmas market this evening (December 20, 2024). A car deliberately drove into a crowd, killing at least one person and injuring several others. A large number of police and rescue workers are on site to secure the situation and provide last-minute care.
According to initial information, the incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle was driven directly into the crowd. People ran in panic while emergency services cordoned off the area. The Christmas market was bypassed. Government spokesman Matthias Schuppe confirmed that the alleged driver of the vehicle had been arrested. Details about his identity or possible motives are not yet available.
Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) made his way to Magdeburg to get an idea of the situation. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families,” he said through the government spokesman. The authorities are working hard to clarify the background to the crime.
The police are calling on the public to avoid the area around the Christmas market and to follow the instructions of the emergency services.
