The cause of death of Dr. Michael Mosley is “undeterminable” but the coroner says it is likely related to one of two reasons: the inquest

A coroner has concluded that British television doctor Michael Mosley probably died of heat stroke after he went missing while on holiday on a Greek island.

The 67-year-old disappeared on the small island of Symi back in June when he left his wife and friends to return to his accommodation, sparking a major search mission.

The operation made headlines around the world, but unfortunately his remains were found four days later.

An autopsy revealed no criminal elements for Dr. Mosley's death, but no exact cause of death.

At an inquest held in the UK on Friday, senior coroner Crispin Butler concluded the 67-year-old's death was “moderate” and “indeterminate”.

He added that the doctor likely died of heat stroke or an “unidentified pathological cause.”

Mr Butler also pointed out that the death was not a result of murder or suicide.

The coroner also revealed a document detailing the family in the timeline.

Dr. Mosley and his wife Dr. Clare Bailey had been staying with friends on Symi and decided to travel to Pedi Beach late in the morning on June 5th.

According to the published document, the 67-year-old had intentionally left his phone at his accommodation because he didn't want to get it wet on the ferry ride.

Dr. Mosley decided to walk home in the late afternoon in scorching temperatures instead of taking the boat that took her there.

“He had his backpack, a liter of water and a biscuit as well as a hat and an umbrella,” it said, adding that the doctor appeared “energetic and cheerful.”

The coroner recorded his findings as an open verdict.

“Michael Mosley collapsed and died on June 5, 2024 in a rocky area near Agia Marina Beach, Symi, Dodecanese, Greece,” his summary reads.

“The temperatures were high during this time. Michael's death was not determined to be the result of homicide, suicide, or an accident causing injury.

“Michael’s death was most likely due to either heat stroke (accident) or an unidentified pathological cause. There was nothing remarkable in toxicology.”

Dr. Mosley became famous for the controversial 5:2 diet, a type of intermittent fasting in which you eat normally for five days and then restrict calories for two days.

He presented a number of health-related programs on British television for over 20 years.
