The collision between a patrol car and a speeding BMW sedan occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. in the 5200 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, according to reports from the scene.
The patrol car caught fire and an officer was thrown through the windshield.
One of the two officers died at the scene, the other was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
OnScene.TV said the suspect driving the BMW was a teenager who died in hospital.
The video news service also reported that up to two other vehicles were hit during the chase.
Police Chief Scott Wahl was at the scene of the accident on Tuesday morning. At a press conference, he said the police officer in the passenger seat of the patrol car was in critical condition.
“I can't put into words what comes out in a moment like that,” Wahl said. Police officers “put their lives on the line for people they don't even know. Last night we lost a good one.”
The collision occurred just west of Interstate 805 and the California Highway Patrol closed off-ramp exits from the freeway.
