Gamers hardly play new games

The Steam Review 2024 provides insights into your own gaming habits over the past twelve months. On top of that, it also reveals some of the tendencies of the entire player base. This shows that older games are played significantly more than brand new titles.

Steam Review 2024 available

Towards the end of the year, many companies and services publish their customers' usage data and prepare it in an attractive form. In addition to Amazon, which published the most frequently asked questions from German Alexa users a few days ago, Valve's gaming platform Steam also has a corresponding offer with its review.

The Steam Review 2024 provides information about which games you played and how often, how many errors you made during the game, or whether you preferred using a mouse and keyboard or a controller. Many of the individual statistics are also compared to the numbers for the entire player base, so that you always know where you stand.

Older games dominate

The details about the age of the games played are particularly interesting. There is a clear trend towards older titles. Because only 15 percent of the total playing time of all Steam users was spent on new releases. A whopping 47 percent of the time, gamers played games that were between one and seven years old. Users spent the remaining 37 percent of the time on titles that were even older, i.e. published before 2016.

Of course, you have to keep in mind that the proportion of new games is getting smaller and smaller. Because every year the offer on Steam increases. According to PC-Gamer, around 18,000 titles were added to the platform in the last twelve months alone. There are now over 90,000 games available.

Blockbusters and total failures

Nevertheless, the little time that gamers spent with current games last year is surprising. After all, Black Myth: Wukong set several records in August as the most successful single-player game of all time. In addition, other very successful games such as Helldivers 2 and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 were released. However, they apparently did not compete against Counter-Strike 2, DOTA 2 or Grand Theft Auto V, as a look at the charts on SteamDB shows.

However, the current year also brought some failures. Games like Ubisoft's Skull and Bones and Sony's Concord make spectacular crash landings. The latter was even discontinued after just 14 days and tore a big hole in the Japanese company's coffers.
