Google improves trend tracking, insights and ad management for retailers

Google provides retailers with AI-generated custom reports.

Google is expanding the opportunities it offers retailers in advance of the upcoming holiday shopping season.

At its annual virtual event, Think Retail, on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, the tech giant announced several new features for users of its retail hub, Merchant Center. These include:

Shopping trends

In the coming weeks, Merchant Center users worldwide will be able to explore shopping trends for retailers by viewing popular shopping queries sorted by popularity and organized by topic and product.

The improved trend information shows what phrases consumers actually use when searching for products, such as “long jeans,” and helps retailers optimize product descriptions for search relevance.

Insights from generative AI

Google will be two new Generative AI Insights features for Merchant Center. Retailers will see generative, AI-powered Insights summaries at the top of the Analytics tab, providing summaries of recent product performance.

This allows retailers to see key performance updates when they log in, such as which products are seeing a big increase in clicks. Retailers can also use AI to answer specific questions about their product data with new custom reports.

With a basic description of the data analysis that users want to review, such as “Show me the performance of my best-selling dresses,” Google creates a custom dataset that highlights a retailer’s performance data, eliminating the need to manually create custom reports.
