The baseball world mourns the loss of Rickey Henderson on Saturday.
Social media was flooded with heartfelt messages for the sports icon, who died aged 65.
Henderson's former Yankee teammate Dave Winfield expressed his condolences on Instagram.
“I still can't believe I lost one of my favorite teammates and great friend Rickey Henderson. Rest in peace,” Winfield wrote.
“Sad to hear of the passing of our friend Rickey Henderson, the greatest leadoff hitter in MLB history!” Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, wrote on and the late Luis Tiant into our Hall of Game.” His condolences go out to his family, his friends and the numerous fans!”
Baseball Hall of Fame member Wade Boggs also had kind words for Henderson, the MLB's all-time scoring leader.
“Sad day for our Hall of Fame family with the passing of Rickey Henderson, one of the greatest players to ever play the game. You will be sorely missed, brother RIP Rickey,” Boggs said on X.
Bobby Valentine, Henderson's manager with the Mets in 1999 and 2000, took to social media after learning of his death.
“It was an honor to wear the same uniform as Rickey Henderson,” Valentine wrote. “He was the most entertaining and dynamic player I have ever seen. RIP Rickey you were the greatest!”
Mike Piazza, who played on the same Mets teams with Henderson, had kind words for the legend.
“Rickey Henderson was a dream to hit from behind as a teammate and a nightmare as a catcher to hit from behind. He was one of the most generous, hysterical and kind people. We will miss him dearly. Prayers for his soul and his family,” Piazza wrote on his X account.
Ozzie Guillen, who played in two All-Star Games with Henderson, also had kind words.
“RIP Rickey, my condolences to the Henderson family,” Guillen wrote. “One of the best ever.”
