As the police announced on Sunday, emergency services were alerted to Mitte last Friday.

Accordingly, witnesses are said to have observed an argument between two men aged 38 and 48 on the Reichstag bank at around 10:15 a.m.

During the argument, the younger man hit his opponent several times and pushed him into the Spree, probably with the intention of killing the 48-year-old.

The man, who was floating in the water, was unable to get to the shore on his own. Alerted emergency services from the Federal Police and the Water Police had to rescue the 48-year-old from the Spree.

He was admitted to hospital with hypothermia.

The suspect was arrested nearby. Yesterday, Saturday, an investigating judge at the Tiergarten district court issued an arrest warrant against the 38-year-old. He has been in custody ever since.

The LKA Berlin's first murder commission is investigating attempted murder.
