Arrest in connection with killing at Berkeley homeless shelter

Mark Dowling, 62, was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the shooting of a man at a West Berkeley homeless shelter.

Berkeley police arrested a suspect Monday, less than 24 hours after he allegedly shot a man at a West Berkeley homeless shelter.

Mark Christopher Dowling, 62, is suspected of shooting the 37-year-old victim multiple times at Ursula Sherman Village at 711 Harrison Street around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Dowling, who has no registered address, was arrested around 10:30 a.m. Monday after officers found him parked in his vehicle near Fourth and Camelia streets.

Officers also reportedly found several weapons and ammunition in Dowling's vehicle.

According to prison records, he is being held without bail at Santa Rita Prison on suspicion of murder.

His arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
