Dog attack in Vancouver: GoFundMe collects reward money for information

“Sky wasn’t just a dog…she was a family member,” said one of the owners of the slain dog.

A grieving family hopes a reward will help them obtain information about a woman who fled the scene after the dog she was carrying killed the family pet.

AJ (Adrien) Tay and his family were relaxing near Second Beach around 5:30 p.m. on August 5 when their Maltipoo Sky was attacked by a larger dog.

After the attack, the unidentified owner fled with her dog while several people followed her. Videos were shared on social media showing the woman leaving the area with her dog on a trail. Many people speculated about the breed of the attacking dog.

“This will have consequences,” says grieving dog owner

In a video shared on his Facebook page, Tay clarified: “I don't really care about race; that's not what this conversation is about.”

“Ultimately, we are here to demand justice for Sky. Ultimately, that dog attacked her and there will be consequences.”

Andy Tay has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money as a reward for information on the owner of the attacking dog, who fled after the incident, as well as legal fees.

“The family consisting of [three] Young children witnessed the brutal attack, ending with Sky lying lifeless after the larger dog finally released her. No one should ever have to experience such trauma, let alone children,” Tay wrote in the fundraiser.

Tay further describes how Sky “danced for you when she wanted food and was the greatest princess and [would roll] about the anticipation of being stroked on her belly.”

The family also has another dog, Zuma, who spends days staring at Sky's playpen, wondering “when she's coming back.”

The Tay family is also pushing for the city and province to change their ordinances and regulations to prevent future dog attacks.

So far, GoFundMe has raised $5,075 of the $10,000 goal.

Animal Services told VIA in an earlier interview that no suspect has come forward to date, but is currently reviewing numerous tips received.

“We appreciate the public's support as these tips are critical to our investigation,” it said.

The animal protection association points out that dog owners play a crucial role in preventing dog violence by complying with legal regulations.

“Sky wasn’t just a dog…she was a family member,” Tay added in his video.

Anyone with additional information that may help identify the individual should contact the VPD at the non-emergency number 604-717-3321 and reference case number 24-135707.
