Courteney Cox is probably most associated with the colorful New York apartment where her character Monica Geller lives. FriendsHowever, in the actor's Californian house, the atmosphere is much more modern and calm.
Those who Scream Star on Instagram gets privy to her minimalist, zen home that features plenty of natural materials and light. Her latest post offers a glimpse into her kitchen, where one feature in particular stands out.
Wooden hardware stands out amidst a black splashback, but it's the open shelving that draws us in. Featuring a variety of stone figurines, Cox proves that these storage units are perfect for both large and small kitchens.
As Cox proves, open shelving combines function and style. While she chose to display decorations, open shelving in the kitchen can be used for practical accessories (which can then be shown off even more depending on the styling approach).
“The great thing about displaying kitchenware on open shelving is that it can instantly add colour, texture and interest to a room,” says Catherine Jacob, Head of Design at Hovia. “For example, use it to display your spices. From the warm tones of turmeric, nutmeg and paprika to refreshing basil and delicious mint, transparent spice containers on this shelf can bring colour and energy to an otherwise unused space.”
To keep the shelves looking neat and tidy, Jacob recommends planning what items will be displayed before placing them in the storage units.
“To get the most out of your shelves, estimate how many containers you need and then choose ones that can be conveniently placed next to each other on the shelf while also looking aesthetically pleasing,” she advises.
In addition, consciously choosing a floating or open shelf is a no-brainer for small kitchens where counter space may be limited.
“Open shelving is not to be underestimated when it comes to small kitchen storage solutions,” says Jacob. “The fact that you have to consciously choose the object that will fit in that space means that the display of the object is purposeful; it's a statement on the wall. Open shelving is a great option for the items you use most as it's easy to access while keeping work surfaces free of clutter… what's not to love!”
