A South Carolina man was killed in an accident in which his motorcycle collided with an animal that ran into the road, officials said.
Jarrett Phillips, a 27-year-old Easley resident, died Monday at a hospital in the north of the state, days after the accident, the Oconee County coroner's office said.
The single-vehicle crash occurred around 10 p.m. on August 21, said Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
According to Bennett, Phillips was the only person on a 1996 Honda motorcycle traveling north on Lawrence Bridge Road in the Seneca area. Near the intersection with Plantation Road, the motorcycle struck an animal that had wandered onto Lawrence Bridge Road, causing the motorcycle to fall onto the road, Bennett said. That's about 4 miles from Clemson University.
Information about the type of animal or whether it survived the crash was not available.
According to the coroner, Phillips was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital and later died there.
It is unknown whether Phillips was wearing a helmet, but the accident remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
According to the state Department of Public Safety, 563 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2024 through Sunday. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, the department reported.
According to DPS data, at least ten people will be killed in traffic accidents in Oconee County in 2024.
