As noted by 9to5MacApple recently began rolling out the ability for Hawaii residents to add a digital version of their driver's license or national ID to the Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch, providing a convenient, contactless way to show proof of identity or age at select airports, businesses, and venues.
Hawaii is the seventh U.S. state to support this feature, joining Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Ohio and, most recently, California.
To add a driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app, tap the plus sign in the upper right corner, select “Driver's License” or “State ID,” and follow the onscreen steps. Hawaii doesn't appear as an option for all iPhone users yet.
Apple first announced this feature in September 2021, but the rollout has been slow and the digital IDs can only be used in a very limited number of locations.
For example, the IDs can be used at select TSA checkpoints at select U.S. airports:
- Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI)
- Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
- Denver International Airport (DEN)
- Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
- Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
- John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
Apple recommends travelers check signage at TSA checkpoints to make sure the feature is available. Visit the TSA website for more details.
Apple's website states that the digital IDs in the Wallet app can also be used to prove age or identity at “select bars, concerts, festivals, and more.” However, the company does not name any specific locations and usage is far from widespread.
In a press release earlier this month, Apple reiterated that iPhone users “do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to provide their ID.”
Apple announced that residents of the six additional states listed below would “soon” have the ability to add their driver's license or ID card to the Wallet app in 2022. But more than two years have passed since then, and none of those states support this feature yet.
These six states:
- Connecticut
- Iowa
- Kentucky
- Mississippi
- Oklahoma
- Utah
