St. Johns, Arizona (AZFamily) – A small community in eastern Arizona mourns the loss of a beloved fire chief.
St. John's Emergency Services announced that Captain and Paramedic David J. Kirk died Tuesday as a result of injuries sustained in an accident. Kirk began his career with the St. John's Volunteer Fire Department in 1979 and has served his community for over 45 years.
Throughout his career, he served as a firefighter, engineer, lieutenant, captain, chief engineer, deputy fire chief and fire chief of the organization.
His list of accolades was expanded by his appointment as the city's first paramedic in 1997. He also helped merge the fire and rescue services with other senior officials.
His last call was answered on Sunday. Staff say he was doing “one of the few things he enjoyed doing … caring for community members in need.”
Funeral arrangements for Captain Kirk are still pending.
