Man dies when SUV tips into water in West Routt

A West Routt County resident died Wednesday afternoon after the all-terrain vehicle he was driving was discovered upside down and submerged in water on a property near Routt County Road 29 in the Pagoda area.

According to the emergency call center, the vehicle, identified as an OHV, was underwater for about one to two hours before rescue workers arrived on the scene.

The man, who authorities believed to be in his 80s, was pronounced dead at 12:24 p.m. Wednesday after rescue workers spent about 40 minutes performing extrication, resuscitation and life-saving efforts, according to the emergency radio report.



Multiple agencies responded to the incident, with the Hayden Police Department and West Routt Fire Department being the first to arrive on the scene.

First responders from Moffat County, including Craig Fire and the Routt County Sheriff's Office, were also on scene, as well as a crew from Classic Air Medical who arrived by helicopter and assisted with resuscitation efforts.



The property where the incident occurred is located in a remote part of unincorporated Routt County south of Hayden and southeast of Craig near the Pagoda neighborhood.
