But a recent video of a prison cell in France is turning these stereotypes on their head and going viral. This French cell is so surprisingly comfortable that some viewers admitted they would be willing to pay to live there!

The prison cell in the viral video from France is causing a stir with its surprising features. It has a nice shoe rack next to the door, plenty of storage space for clothes and even a small TV for entertainment.
The bed comes with a bedside lamp, and now comes the fully equipped kitchen area with kitchen utensils!
The bathroom may be small, but it has everything you need, and to top it off, there is a screen with the daily menu where inmates can supposedly place their food orders.
Such a 1 RK (one room kitchen) would cost around Rs 25,000 per month in a big city like Gurugram in India, and as one commentator noted, it would be $1,800 per month in New York City.
Are French prisons as relaxed as they seem?
The video went viral, being viewed over 10 million times in less than 24 hours.
In the comments, people mentioned that they had heard that French prisons were like holiday clubs, complete with equipped kitchens, refrigerators, televisions and games consoles.
There are also numerous YouTube videos on the state of French prisons, such as this one:
“In almost every video I see, most inmates have cell phones and film their daily lives. Drug shipments and other cell phones for resale can be seen,” said one commenter.
However, another commentator pointed out: “They can have all the electronic devices, food, clothing, cell phones, etc., what they don't have is FREEDOM. Freedom is priceless.”
There are also numerous Reddit threads discussing whether French prisons are really as relaxed as they seem.

A French commentator clarified that this luxury is not the norm in all French prisons, noting: “Many prisons in France are overcrowded and almost unsanitary, not all of them of course, but the vast majority. It would be interesting if OP could indicate where this prison is located to be able to verify if this is really the case or if it is a fake.”
In addition, some suspected that these seemingly comfortable prisons might be just a facade designed to impress international observers.
