The Chicago Cubs will likely be active on the free agency side next winter.
Chicago has impressed recently and is starting to look like many expected this season. However, there is a chance that the Cubs' winning streak may come too late. The Cubs are currently 5 1/2 games out of a wild card spot in the National League and trail the New York Mets in the standings.
Even so, the Cubs could be even better next season. Chicago will have money to spend and could make a splash. Jon Heyman of the New York Post even listed the Cubs among the top candidates for New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto.
“Soto bidding war: Yankees 1-1,” Heyman said. “I'm sticking with the (New York Mets) at 5-1, second choice. That doesn't leave much room for anyone else. Everyone else is an underdog in my eyes. I've got the (Los Angeles Dodgers) at 15-1, the (San Francisco Giants) at 20-1, (Toronto Blue Jays) at 25-1 and the (Philadelphia Phillies), (Boston Red Sox), (Chicago Cubs) and (Washington Nationals).”
The most likely outcome is certainly still that Soto returns to the Yankees in 2025. While that may be the case, Chicago could be an interesting option for him. The Cubs are not far from being one of the top teams in the National League, and signing Soto would certainly speed up the process. If the Cubs can somehow sign him this coming offseason, Chicago will be one of the best teams in the National League in 2025 for the foreseeable future.
