Radware Global Threat Analysis Report
DDoS attacks will increase massively in 2024
Providers on the topic
In its Global Threat Analysis Report, the security company Radware has shown how cyberattacks have continued to increase in the first half of the year. DDoS attacks are also continuing to increase.
The Radware Global Threat Analysis Report shows the continuing increase in the number of cyberattacks. Compared to 2023, DDoS attacks have increased by more than 265 percent.
DDoS attacks and other attacks are increasing
The EMEA region was particularly badly affected, due to geopolitical tensions and high-impact events such as the EU parliamentary elections and Euro 2024 in Germany. Web DDoS activity saw a dramatic increase in the first half of 2024. The number of attacks increased by 265 percent compared to the second half of 2023. The concentration was particularly noticeable in the EMEA region, which fended off 90.9 percent of all attacks. The reasons for this include the EU parliamentary elections and Euro 2024 in Germany, which exerted a particular attraction on attackers. One particularly notable attack reached a peak load of 14.7 million requests per second and lasted a total of six days.
There was also an increase in attacks at the network level. The number of attacks per organization increased by 16 percent in the first half of 2024 compared to the second half of 2023 and by 12 percent compared to the first half of 2023. While the EMEA region recorded 23 percent of global network attacks, they had to fend off 56 percent of the global data volume. This shows the intensity of attacks in this region. What was particularly striking was that although the number of attacks in the EMEA region decreased by 30 percent compared to 2023, the data volume fended off increased by 122 percent.
In the area of DNS DDoS activities, there was a five-fold increase in attacks between the first half of 2023 and the first half of 2024. Large attacks with peaks of up to 811,000 requests per second were observed, particularly in the financial sector. This shows the attackers' targeted targeting of critical infrastructure.
Hacktivist activities remained dynamic, with pro-Russian groups such as NoName057(16) in particular being prominent. These groups focused their attacks primarily on Ukraine, but also on other countries such as the USA, Israel and India. Most attacks were coordinated via platforms such as Telegram, where DDoS-as-a-service offerings also gained visibility.
In summary, the report shows that the threat landscape remains tense in 2024, especially in the EMEA region, where geopolitical events and major events have led to an increase in attack activity. Attacks are not only becoming more numerous, but also more complex and intense, posing a significant challenge to the organizations affected.
