Security package: Less money, more deportations: Can this solve the problems?

In response to the knife attack in Solingen, the German government agreed this week on a package of measures for migration and asylum policy. The main focus of the package was to tighten up the residence regulations. For example, people who entered the country via another EU country and were registered there, so-called Dublin cases, will only receive minimal benefits for a certain period of time. In addition, more and more deportations will be carried out. The suspected perpetrator, who killed three people and seriously injured eight others at the Solingen town festival, was supposed to be transferred to Bulgaria in 2023. He was on the day of the deportation However, it cannot be found. The Federal Government's package of measures also includes a knife ban. Political editor Simon Langemann assesses whether the plans can solve the problems in migration policy.

When it comes to the climate, good and bad news are lined up side by side. On the one hand, there are successes in climate protection. In Germany, for example, there was more clean electricity than ever before in the first half of 2024. On the other hand, the figures on global warming offer little hope. The earth's temperature has risen faster in the last ten years than has ever been measured before. Stefan Schmitt, knowledge editor at ZEIT ONLINE, explains in the podcast how the different reports fit together and what role China plays in climate protection.
