Berlin is looking eagerly at Saxony and Thuringia: State elections are coming up in both federal states. And these also have a national political significance, because the eastern elections are also seen as a test of the mood in the country – also because of the upcoming federal election in 2025. This is particularly bitter for the traffic light parties – they are achieving catastrophic results. However, the AfD was able to make significant gains and the BSW also achieved high results straight away.

High voter turnout in Thuringia

In Thuringia, the turnout is similar to that of the official parliamentary election. According to the state election officer, around 44.4 percent of eligible voters had cast their votes in the polling stations by 2 p.m. In Saxony, the preliminary voter turnout is slightly lower than in the state election five years ago. At 12 p.m., it was 25.8 percent, says state election officer Martin Richter. Five years ago, in the same period, the figure was 26.2 percent. However, postal voters were not included in the figures.
