Residents protest in Siliguri and demand justice for the victim

Residents of Siliguri's Subhas Pally area took to the streets on Sunday to protest the rape and murder of a doctor student in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last month.

Earlier that day, people from different communities in Kolkata had joined a protest march that started at College Square and headed towards the Dharmatala district.
As they marched towards Dharmatala, protesters held a banner reading “I want justice for my sisters.”
TMC representatives and employees also held a protest rally in Kolkata against the rape and murder case.
They called on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to disclose the status of the investigation into the case and to provide for the death penalty in the Constitution for perpetrators of such crimes.
On August 31, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech at the inaugural session of the two-day National Conference of District Judiciary at Bharat Mandapam, reiterated that many stringent laws have been enacted in the country to protect women.
“Today, atrocities against women and safety of children… are a serious concern of the society. Many strict laws have been enacted in the country to protect women, but we need to make them more proactive. The faster the cases of atrocities against women are decided, the more security half the population will have,” said Prime Minister Modi.
The sexual assault on the aspiring doctor sparked massive outrage and shocked the conscience of the country. The case was handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta Police on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
Sanjay Roy, a volunteer at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the incident.
The alleged murder and sexual assault of a trainee doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has sparked a war of words between the BJP and the party demanding Mamata Banerjee's resignation.
