Sauron's only goal is to bring Middle Earth under his absolute rule. To do this, he uses the Rings of Power to control their bearers and consolidate his dark power. But who was the Dark Lord who struck fear and terror throughout Middle Earth?

Starting out as a lieutenant to the fallen Vala Melkor, Sauron quickly overcame his role as a servant of dark forces and soon became the master of his own deeds and the greatest threat of his time.

Amazon's fantasy series “The Rings of Power” shows Sauron's development into one of the most feared beings in Middle Earth. But who is this mysterious villain really? Here are seven exciting facts you need to know about Sauron.

1. Sauron was not originally evil

Sauron, whose real name is Mairon, was once a powerful Maia, a divine being who served the Valar, the supreme gods of Middle Earth. He began as a servant of the Valar Aulë, the smith and craftsman of the world. However, Sauron's quest for order and perfection eventually led him into darkness when he joined Morgoth, the first Dark Lord.

2. It is ancient

Sauron is an ancient being who existed before the First Age of Middle Earth. As a Maia, he is technically immortal and has seen the end throughout the ages and the Great Empire. His longevity and deep knowledge make him one of the most dangerous beings in all of Middle Earth.

Only one other being is as old as Sauron: Galadriel. Galadriel and Sauron have a long history together that goes back to the First Age. Galadriel, who had already fought against Morgoth, saw Sauron as a great threat. After the final victory against Sauron at the end of the Third Age, Galadriel is around 8,000 years old when she travels to Valinor with her husband Celeborn, Bilbo, Frodo and Gandalf and leaves Middle Earth.

3. The One Ring is his masterpiece

Sauron's greatest work and at the same time his greatest weakness is the One Ring. He forged this ring to control the bearers of the other Rings of Power. The ring contains a large part of Sauron's own power, giving him the ability to project his willpower onto the bearers of the other rings. But this also made him vulnerable, because without the ring, Sauron was unable to develop his full power.

Sauron plans to use the 20 Rings of Power to subjugate all of Middle Earth. He manages to deceive the elven smith Celebrimbor and creates 19 of these rings. But he forges the One Ring, which is supposed to control the others, in secret, without Celebrimbor knowing of his dark intentions.

4. Sauron is a master of deception

One of Sauron's most calculating traits is his ability to deceive and manipulate others. As “Annatar”, the Lord of Gifts, he gained the trust of the Elves and helped them forge the Rings of Power. Sauron is not only a powerful warrior, but also a skilled schemer who often plays his enemies against each other.

5. He has taken many forms

In the early days of his reign, Sauron was able to change his form at will. Before his fall, he often took on a handsome, charismatic form to seduce and deceive his enemies. However, after his first major loss of physical form, when Númenor fell, he was no longer able to assume a handsome form and appeared only as a dark shadow.

6. Sauron was once almost defeated

After the destruction of Númenor, Sauron lost his physical form and was only able to survive through the One Ring. At the end of the Second Age, during the Battle of the Last Alliance, Isildur cut the Ring from Sauron's finger, weakening him considerably. Without the Ring, Sauron could not regain his physical form and retreated as a ghostly presence.

7. The all-seeing eye

Through his battle against the Last Alliance, Sauron lost his earthly form. From then on, the large eye sat on top of his fortress Barad-dur in Mordor. For this reason, it is also called the Red Eye, the Lidless Eye, the Eye of Barad-dur or the Evil Eye.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 continues on Amazon Prime Video with one episode per week. The season consists of eight episodes in total and work is already underway on Season 3 of the “The Lord of the Rings” series.
