Reward for Macklin arsonist now increased to $24,000

Suspected arson continues to be a problem in the Macklin area, with the reward offered by the Macklin & District Fire and Rescue Service having been significantly increased over the past week.

The situation first flared up in late July. On August 15, the reward was $15,000, and now, about ten days later, the reward has grown to $25,000.

Following the last update on August 15, crews responded to three more suspicious fires the following Saturday. One was noted south of Macklin, another at the intersection of Highway 17 and 14. The third fire was noted west of Express Avenue in Macklin, and crews responded to the same location on Express Avenue on Sunday evening.

“Please keep an eye out. This continues to be a very concerning situation that needs to be addressed!” the fire department said on social media.

From anonymous community helpers to business owners, more money was added on Monday to bring the reward pot to $20,000. Two days later it was increased to $21,500, and two more days finally brought it to $24,000 at the start of the week.

An entire community on guard could not stop the suspected arsonist from attempting to set the fire. Below is the latest fire update from the local fire department. Anyone with information on this situation can contact the Unity RCMP at (306) 228-6300.
