The bodywork specialist Thyssenkrupp Automotive Body Solutions will cut 400 jobs nationwide. “Half of all jobs at the Burghaun site are at risk,” writes IG Metall Hanau-Fulda in a press release.
Burghaun – In a virtual “live update”, employees at Thyssenkrupp Automotive Body Solutions were informed that they were planning to reduce staff on the scale mentioned. The greatest need for reductions is seen in the operational project business. As a result, the Burghaun and Lockweiler sites in Saarland had to suffer the lion's share of the planned job cuts.
Thyssenkrupp cuts jobs – Burghaun site also affected
In a question and answer session, employees were informed that the engineering department in Burghaun would no longer exist in the future. Its elimination would mean halving the total workforce. Employees were informed that their work would be relocated to locations and service providers in low-wage countries. Their know-how should continue to be passed on to those affected until the end of their employment, even making themselves redundant, according to IG Metall Hanau-Fulda.
The works councils at the Burghaun site are stunned by this approach. In the last five years, two restructuring programs and extensive staff reduction measures have already been implemented, which were actually intended to secure the sites and remaining jobs in the long term.
The chairman of the works council in Burghaun, Christian Landeck, said after the information event: “The employees are now once again facing existential fears and uncertainty. Our jobs are once again in danger. Especially in Burghaun, this is not only completely irresponsible towards the employees, but also towards the entire region.”
IG Metall Hanau-Fulda wants to “stand up for the preservation of all jobs”
Matthias Ebenau, managing director of IG Metall Hanau-Fulda, was equally shocked: “We are confronted with the plans of a company that is increasingly acting against its own employees from the very top of the company.” We will examine the next steps closely. For us, the first thing is that what the management has presented does not correspond to our idea of social entrepreneurship. We will stand up for the retention of all jobs.”
The IG Metall Hanau-Fulda recently commented on the planned closure of the Putzmeister Group's Gründau plant.
