In San Francisco, Bayfront Park, a new open space measuring almost 2.2 hectares, was opened. The park is located in the trendy Mission Bay district between the Chase Center (home of the State Warriors, basketball) and San Francisco Bay.
Special plants and shrubs are intended to counteract flooding
Numerous climate-adapted trees and native plants have been planted in Bayfront Park to curb the effects of climate change. Bushes, shrubs and special plants on the shore are intended to counteract sea level rise. The park's elevated location also provides robust protection from potential flooding.
Steel from the old Bay Bridge will be reused
The new park is located on the eastern edge of Mission Bay near 16th Street and Terry A. Francois Boulevard on a former maritime industrial area. To reflect the site's industrial heritage, Bayfront Park utilizes a large amount of reclaimed steel from the old Bay Bridge. This material is now used for seating, tables, sculptures and viewing platforms.
New entrances to the bay have been created thanks to multiple stepped terraces, lawns and a steel observation deck that extends over the water's edge – offering sweeping views of the bay and city from everywhere.
The extended Bay Trail runs through Bayfront Park, connecting downtown and SoMa with the revitalized southeast waterfront. The trail is very popular among walkers, joggers, cyclists and skaters.
A district in transition
Mission Bay has become a vibrant neighborhood in recent years, home to many institutions, including the University of California San Francisco Hospital and the Chase Center. In addition, more than 6,200 residential units as well as many commercial and retail spaces were built in the area.
“The new Bayfront Park is a waterfront oasis and the largest park in Mission Bay's 16-acre park system.” “Bayfront Park's central location, access to the existing Muni T-Third Street light rail connection, a future ferry Service and the Bay Trail make the park a popular gathering place for residents and visitors, said Thor Kaslofsky, executive director at the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure.
“The opening of Bayfront Park will significantly improve the experience for everyone who visits the Chase Center,” says Brandon Schneider, President and COO of the State Warriors: “The Warriors are committed to San Francisco and the Mission Bay district .” a vibrant and trendy destination, and we are pleased that Bayfront Park contributes to that overall vision.” Since Chase Center opened five years ago, more than 400 events have taken place, attracting nearly five million visitors .
Recently, many new parks have been created in San Francisco
Bayfront Park complements a network of over 16 acres of park and open space in Mission Bay. This includes the new China Basin Park across from Oracle Park, Agua Vista Park and Mariposa Bayfront Park.
Bayfront Park is the latest in a series of new parks to open along or near the San Francisco waterfront in the past four years. Popular with locals and visitors alike are the Presidio Tunnel Tops and Battery Bluffs in the Presidio, Francisco Park near Ghirardelli Square, Crane Cove Park in Dogpatch and the recently opened India Basin Shoreline Park on the Southeastern Waterfront.
